Silver

Before antibiotics, silver was used to treat bacterial infections, and other things.  People also used to drop silver coins into their wells to cleanse the water.

As antibiotic resistance has become a concern, along with side effects from antibiotics, silver may be a consideration.  According to an article in the Journal of Medicine and Life "While the development of antibiotic resistance is an alarming concern in clinical practice, the advantage of silver is that it has minimal bacterial resistance."  The article discusses different applications of silver for burn patients.  It could also prevent skin burns from radiation treatments as a woman shared her testimony about the protective benefits she experienced from spraying silver on the areas that were being treated.

Along with treatment for burns and wounds, it is also ingested by some people to boost immunity and overcome infections of various kinds.  It also can be used to treat funguses and in an article on the National Library of Medicine website it said, "Silver has long been recognized as an effective antimicrobial agent even at low concentrations , and recently silver nanoparticles have gained recognition as a promising antibacterial/antifungal agent."  Another article on the website ScienceDirect entitled Colloidal silver combating pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa and MRSA in chronic rhinosinusitis  explains how effective colloidal silver has been shown in treating chronic rhinitis as its able to kill bacteria in biofilms.

Another astonishing thing about colloidal silver is its effects on antibiotics.  It not only strengthens the potency of antibiotics when used in conjunction with them, but can make them effective against resistant bacteria as sited in this article from the National Library of Medicine.  In an article on the website Science American the article says about a study, "Many antibiotics are thought to kill their targets by producing reactive oxygen compounds, and Collins and his team showed that when boosted with a small amount of silver these drugs could kill between 10 and 1,000 times as many bacteria."

Colloidal silver is made using silver electrodes and distilled water.  Details on the process can be found here.  It can be purchased in many forms, and although there are many warnings about it by mainstream medicine (FDA) I was shocked to see it being sold at CVS, including in capsule form!  Its always best to seek the direction of a medical professional, however, when beginning to use something new.  You also have to be careful when purchasing colloidal silver as many products labeled as such are actually ionic silver which does not work as well as the silver has not been reduced to nano particles.  This article discusses the difference, and also warns taking large amounts of ionic silver over a long period of time can actually lead to argyria (turning permanently blue).
